What "cost engineering knowledge" covers
Cost engineering is the umbrella discipline (you met it in Lesson 1). Where the next lessons zoom into single specialties — estimating, scheduling, EVM, risk — this one steps back to show the whole required toolkit. A cost engineer isn't necessarily an expert in every area, but is literate across all of them and deep in some.
The knowledge areas
The technical subject matter a cost engineer should understand falls into a handful of domains — each of which becomes a track on this platform:
- Cost estimating — Predicting project cost — methods, quantities, pricing, estimate classes, and the basis of estimate.
- Planning & scheduling — Modelling project time — WBS, CPM, the critical path, statusing, and forecasting.
- Project control & EVM — Measuring performance against the plan — baselines, earned value, variance, and forecasting at completion.
- Economic analysis — Evaluating investments — time value of money, life-cycle cost, NPV, and financial decision-making.
- Risk management — Identifying and analyzing uncertainty — qualitative and quantitative methods, and contingency.
- Project management context — Scope, contracts, procurement, and how cost and schedule fit the wider management of a project.
The skills that apply it
Knowledge alone doesn't deliver projects. The standard is equally clear that a cost engineer needs practical and human skills to turn analysis into outcomes:
