What counts as "defined" depends on what you're building. This is the five-class estimate system tuned for process plants — maturity measured by the engineering deliverables (block flows, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment lists) that each class requires. Built on AACE 18R-97.

What this standard adds

If you've read Lesson 1, you know the framework: five classes, driven by project definition, with accuracy narrowing as definition grows. This lesson doesn't change that logic — it makes it concrete for process projects by answering the practical question: "which documents must exist for an estimate to count as Class 3 on a chemical plant?"

Why process plants are distinctive

Process facilities have features that shape how their estimates mature — and why they get their own classification table:

  1. Equipment-driven cost — Major equipment (reactors, columns, compressors, exchangers) dominates cost — so the equipment list is a pivotal maturity milestone.
  2. Process flow defines everything — The plant is organized around how material flows and reacts — captured in PFDs and P&IDs, which become the backbone deliverables.
  3. Factored estimating early on — Early classes lean heavily on equipment-factored methods (total cost as a multiple of equipment cost) — distinctive to process work.
  4. High bulk & interconnection — Piping, instrumentation, and controls are extensive and tightly coupled — definition of these drives the later classes.

Accuracy in the process context

The accuracy ranges follow the same shape as the general system — wide at Class 5, tight at Class 1 — but process projects, with their heavy equipment and bulk quantities, have their own typical bands and a strong reliance on contingency at the early classes to cover undefined scope.
