Schedule Classification System

Not every schedule is the same animal. The classification system is a shared language for how mature a schedule is, what it can be trusted to do, and how accurate its dates really are — the scheduling twin of cost-estimate classification (Class 5 → Class 1). Built on AACE 27R-03.

Why classify a schedule at all

If you've met the cost-estimate classification system (Class 5 → Class 1), this is its scheduling twin. The idea is identical: as a project becomes better defined, the schedule built from it becomes more detailed, more reliable, and more accurate. Naming the class tells every stakeholder how much weight the dates deserve.

The primary driver: project definition

A schedule's class is driven first and foremost by the level of project definition available when it's built — the same primary characteristic that drives estimate class. You can't build a detailed, reliable schedule on a vague scope; the schedule can only be as mature as the information feeding it.

Secondary characteristics then describe and refine the class:

  1. End usage — what the schedule is for: concept screening, sanction, control, or execution.
  2. Level of detail — how finely the work is broken down (ties to the schedule levels in the next lesson).
  3. Methodology — how it was built: analogy/benchmark at the low end, full CPM with logic and resources at the high end.
  4. Expected accuracy — the credible range around its dates: wide early, tight late.

The five classes (5 → 1)

Like estimates, schedules run from Class 5 (earliest, least defined) to Class 1 (most mature, most detailed). The numbers count down as definition goes up.

Ten things to remember

  1. Schedule classification is the scheduling twin of estimate classification — same logic, applied to time.
