Implementing Project Constructability
The people who know how things go together usually arrive after the design is fixed, when their best ideas are expensive to act on. Constructability flips that — injecting construction know-how into planning and design early, when a sketch can still change for the price of an eraser. Built on AACE 30R-03.
What constructability is
Where the last lesson (48R-06) reviewed one artifact — the schedule — for buildability, constructability (30R-03) is the broader, ongoing program: deliberately feeding construction insight into every early decision, from concept through design to the field. It's a mindset and a process, not a single review.
Why early is everything
The value of constructability is governed by one classic curve: early in a project your ability to influence outcomes is high and the cost of making a change is low; late in the project it's the reverse. A construction idea that's free at concept stage (move the plant room, change the sequence, simplify a connection) can cost a fortune once steel is fabricated.
Running a constructability program
Implementing constructability means building it into the project as a deliberate, repeatable practice — not hoping good ideas surface by luck. Core elements:
- Commit & resource it — make constructability an explicit objective with ownership, budget, and management support — not an optional extra.
- Involve construction early — bring superintendents, trades, and construction managers into planning and design reviews from concept onward.
- Use structured reviews — hold constructability reviews at project gates, with checklists drawn from experience and prior lessons.
- Capture lessons learned — maintain a lessons-learned database so each project's hard-won insights improve the next — the program's compounding engine.
- Track & close the loop — log constructability ideas, decisions, and their realized benefits, so the program proves its value and improves.

Constructability isn't abstract — it shows up as concrete, recurring ideas the program looks for:
